On the Road

On location with globe-trekking video crews

05SEPT07

Silver Oaks Communications is housed in beautiful offices nestled under a stand of majestic oak trees on a hilltop overlooking the Mississippi River. Sounds like we’d never want to leave our offices, right? On the contrary-Silver Oaks members “Have Passports, Will Travel.” Whether by car, commercial flight or corporate jet, Silver Oaks members and crews are happy to go far and wide to meet with clients and shoot videos covering a broad scope of work. We have traversed every region of the United States, including a Who’s Who of American cities: Worcester, Mass.; Baton Rouge, La.; Miami, Fla.; Riceland, Ark.; Boulder, Colo.; Gillette, Wyo; Muleshoe, Tex.; Phoenix, Ariz.; Los Angeles, Calif. and Seattle, Wash., just to name a few.

And we’re glad to go farther afield, as well. Video crews and associates have worked in countless locations on this continent and Europe. While the Silver Oaks team is hard-working and focused on the job, we enjoy the perks of travel in our spare time, like finding what local dishes are offered. For example, as the crew in England found out, curry is not just a spice. After being informed they were going out for dinner one night, the group soon discovered that all Indian food is known as “curry” and hugely popular with the Brits. Even stateside assignments are not without culinary adventures. One crew member at a location in the north woods of Minnesota was advised by a local to “try the Goober Burger.” Being an adventurous sort, he gamely ordered the oddly-named hamburger and, unable to identify the curious combination of flavors, opened the bun to find mayo on one side—and peanut butter on the other. Mmmmm.

It’s not all just about local color and flavorful food, though. We have had our fair share of adventures, many of them humorous, and all making for great stories upon returning home. As one member of our team related, an expected one-day on-location assignment turned into an unexpected five days at the client's request. The representative was more than happy to oblige and see the project through. However, there was one small problem—he'd packed only one pair of clean. . . socks. Not a big deal for the resourceful fellow, who just ran down to a local retail store and bought himself some new ones.

At Silver Oaks we are seasoned travelers and take curious cuisine, snowstorms and unexpected shopping trips all in stride. No matter what the nature of the project is, we’re ready to go. We keep our passports up to date, and continue to make it to meetings, give presentations, and find our way to video shoots in remote locations—and restaurants which serve “Goober Burgers”–determined to deliver on our promise to every client.
