Project Description

When Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center opened its “My BodyWorks” exhibit, Silver Oaks was there behind the scenes involved in multimedia production. Working closely with the Exploreum’s educators, we developed a unique interactive experience for children to explore the implications of diabetes.

“The Adventures of Captain Insulin” educates visitors about the importance of healthy food and activity choices. The storyline revolves around accepting Captain Insulin’s mission to be a targeting specialist and ensure that the body is supplied with the insulin its cells need to absorb glucose. During a period of one day, visitors must make food, activity and medication choices, and then experience the respective effects in the body. Armed with a joystick, they must shoot insulin to the cells in need of the glucose.

To enhance the experience, special effects are incorporated so that “playability” and ease of shooting during the game play mode is directly impacted by the visitors’ respective choices. For instance if sugar levels get too high, game play becomes sluggish – thus providing visitors with an “in body” glimpse of someone who struggles with diabetes.

In addition, Silver Oaks also partnered with another multimedia software developer to design a series of interactives for the exhibit that showcase human anatomy, concept of Body Mass Index and food choices for planning a healthy diet.
