Project Description

Housed in the River Pilots Pier at the Buffalo Bill Museum in LeClaire, Iowa, is the oldest wooden-hulled steamboat, the “Lone Star.” Built in 1869, the wooden, side-wheeler steamboat operated on the Mississippi River until 1967 when it was finally put in dry dock. Recognizing the historical significance of the Lone Star, both in its unique construction as well as its role in the local river communities, the Buffalo Bill Museum contracted Silver Oaks to develop an informational audio tour. Our writer and audio engineer worked closely with the museum director to develop audio tracks that highlight the general history of the boat, as well as provide explanations about its key components, interspersing ambient river sounds and musical interludes where appropriate. The resulting series of 15 audio tracks allow visitors to now conduct self-guided tours through the steamboat, listening to the information at their own pace via hand-held audio guides.
