Whitey’s Ice Cream Cartons

That’s one way to describe the newly designed cartons of Quad-Cities’ favorite ice cream company, Whitey’s.

Designed by Silver Oaks Communications, the new user-friendly containers incorporate the company’s familiar red stripes and white background, with enticing new photographs of 16 Whitey’s ice cream flavors.

Silver Oaks’ art directors and photographers went to great lengths to capture the true look of the creamy confection, conducting the photo shoot during the coldest days of winter. To keep conditions at their optimum, the studio thermostat was turned down, doors were thrown open, and the staff dressed in winter coats, hats and gloves.

Whitey’s owners offered their expertise as “scoopers,” dishing out ice cream just the way it’s done in Whitey’s parlors. Photographs were carefully directed, paying close attention to color and lighting - lighting for photographing Swiss Almond Chocolate, for example, is very different from lighting French Vanilla.

Silver Oaks then digitally enhanced the photos to correctly reproduce not just the color, but also the fine texture of freshly scooped ice cream right down to the frozen sheen of exposed nuts, fruit and chunks of dark chocolate.

The artwork files also required meticulous attention to detail and calibration in preparation for printing on the container’s challenging new “scround” shape. Part round, part square, and tapered from the opening to the base, the cartons are designed to fit in newer refrigerator doors. They also freeze better than the traditional rectangular cartons, and the lids provide a better seal.

The finished product is totally delectable. Whitey’s customers browsing the freezer section of their local grocery stores or at the nine area Whitey’s locations will get a taste of their favorite flavors just by looking at the carton.
